Fight Over Fear: Ayesha Khan on the Importance of Mammograms!

Dr. Storella discusses the importance of early detection with patient, Ayesha Khan.

Ayesha Khan, TV personality from DC's Fox 5 news has been using her platform to spread breast cancer awareness since her diagnoses in July 2021.

A year ago at the Germantown Women's Imaging Center, Ayesha was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer. Since then she has had a single mastectomy. On July 7, 2022 Ayesha returned to CRA for her annual mammogram. Because Ayesha has had cancer, this visit was considered a diagnostic mammogram meaning her exam would be read immediately by our breast imaging specialist, Dr. Janet Storella.

Upon arrival, Ayesha checked in, was brought back to her personal changing room, then taken into the Mammography exam room. After her mammogram was completed, Ayesha met with Dr. Storella where she was told her results are all clear, no signs of cancer!

Currently, it is recommended that women  begin annual screening mammograms at the age of 40. In addition, Dr. Storella recommends that all women perform regular self-breast exams to become familiar with their breasts and review any risk factors they may have, like a family history of breast cancer, with their doctor.

In Ayesha's case, she found a breast lump at age 39. While breast cancer is not as common at this age, Ayesha wants all women to know the importance of early detection.
