Why Early Detection Matters
Lung cancer often develops without symptoms until it’s more advanced. Finding it early can make a meaningful difference.
- More treatment options
- Less invasive care
- Better outcomes
Who Should Consider this Scan?
You may qualify for annual screening if you:
- Are 50–80 years old
- Have a 20 pack-year or greater smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years
- Have no lung cancer symptoms
What does "Pack Year" mean?
A pack-year measures lifetime smoking exposure:
- 1 pack/day for 20 years = 20 pack-years
- A pack year is calculated by multiplying the number of packs of cigarettes smoked per day by the number of years an individual has smoked.
What If You’re Concerned but Don’t Smoke?
Most lung cancers are linked to smoking — but not all. Up to 1 in 5 cases occur in people who have never smoked.
If you’re experiencing symptoms like a persistent cough, shortness of breath, or unexplained changes in your health, it’s important to talk with your doctor. Imaging may still play an important role in understanding what’s going on.
What to Expect During Your Visit
Before Your Scan
No special preparation is needed. You can eat, drink, and take your usual medications. Wear comfortable clothing and avoid metal when possible.
During Your Scan
You’ll lie on a table that moves through the CT scanner. The scan takes just a few minutes, and you may be asked to briefly hold your breath. No needles. No contrast. No discomfort.
After Your Scan
You can return to your normal routine right away. A radiologist will review your images, and results are typically shared within a few business days.
Why Screening Matters
Lung cancer often develops without symptoms until it’s more advanced. Finding it early can make a meaningful difference.
- Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer death in the U.S.
- When lung cancer is found at an early stage, the 5-year survival rate can exceed 60%, compared to roughly 10–20% when diagnosed at later stages. (American Cancer Society)
- Screening is recommended annually for high-risk adults.
