Lenox Hill Radiology Featured by News 12 for Advancements in Lung Cancer Screening
Lenox Hill Radiology was recently featured in a News 12 Turn to Tara report exploring how artificial intelligence and advanced imaging technology are transforming lung cancer screening and helping radiologists identify potential concerns earlier.
During the segment, News 12 senior reporter Tara Rosenblum visited Lenox Hill Radiology to experience firsthand how a low-dose CT lung cancer screening is performed. The quick, noninvasive scan can be completed in less than a minute and produces detailed images that allow radiologists to identify and closely monitor small lung nodules.
Dr. John Melnick of Lenox Hill Radiology spoke with News 12 about the importance of increasing access to lung cancer screening, noting that only approximately 20% of eligible individuals currently receive this potentially lifesaving exam. Artificial intelligence is also providing radiologists with additional support when reviewing lung screening images.
“When computers are there to assist, they basically bring your eyes to the areas that are potentially suspicious,” Dr. Melnick explained.
Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States. Low-dose CT screening is designed to detect potential signs of lung cancer before symptoms appear, when treatment may be most effective. Lenox Hill Radiology’s Lung Screening with Expanded Access program helps make low-dose CT lung cancer screening available to more adults, including current and former smokers, people exposed to secondhand smoke, and individuals with occupational risk factors, such as firefighters and veterans, and is available at a $165 self-pay rate for individuals who may not meet insurance eligibility requirements.
Individuals with a history of smoking or prolonged exposure to environmental toxins are encouraged to speak with their healthcare provider about whether lung cancer screening may be appropriate for them.
